The Ultra Violet units help maintain a healthy ecosystem, keeping the water clean from unwanted algae and plant waste. Put simply the water continually passes through the UV light and halts the growth of algae. The algae cells clump together which makes them easier to filter. A quartz sleeve protects the bulb from the water.
You should replace the UV lamp annually for optimum performance. Although the lamp may still light up it no longer emits the right UV radiation.
